Periodontal disease (gum disease) is an infection of the gums and bone, that can be caused or accelerated by many factors but the main cause is bacteria in the form of a sticky, colorless plaque that forms on your teeth constantly. The disease starts with Gingivitis, appearing swollen and increasingly red or dark. They may also bleed easily. The disease is reversible at this stage, but if left untreated it may develop into Periodontitis – a more serious condition. This needs treated right away to avoid tooth loss and permanent damage to gums, bone, and other support structures of the teeth.

Indicators of Periodonitis:

  1. Gums bleed easily
  2. Chronic bad breath or taste in the mouth
  3. Changes in the way dentures and partials fit
  4. Gums are swollen, red, or tender
  5. Gums are receding
  6. Permanent teeth are loose and moving
  7. Presence of pus
  8. Pockets form at the base of teeth

Periodontitis does not go away and, without treatment, will only get worse!

If caught in time, with proper treatment the disease can be controlled and maintained. This may include scaling and root planing (cleaning of the root surfaces), followed by additional therapy such as local application of antibiotic material. More treatment may be required but would be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. All patients will need to practice improved dental hygiene techniques and the majority of them will be recommended for an ongoing maintenance therapy.
